It is a project that speaks to ideas of ecology, o It is a project that speaks to ideas of ecology, of restoring balance, of establishing an ecosystem that is self-sufficient. It distinguishes itself by creating value that is embedded within the land; a value that is removed from the Anthropos – reinforcing the ability of a commission to be more than its immediate use or context. The processes that were laid out at the time have become foundational principles – principles of sustainability, of creating value within the land, of ecology – for the commissions that the studio now undertakes. It has led to:
- Questioning ideas of hierarchy between man and nature; building value within the land.
– Setting out an adaptable process that allows for the restoration and rejuvenation of land.
– Demonstrating the resilience of nature.
– A project that is a result of simple, informed solutions being deployed to address issues of sustainability, biodiversity, and ecology.

As athletes, Shriyans Bhandari and Ramesh Dhami ra As athletes, Shriyans Bhandari and Ramesh Dhami ran hundreds of kilometres every year. They also ran through at least three to four pairs of sports shoes every year. The soles were in good condition but the shoe sides tore within months. The duo always wondered if they could find some use for the intact soles of these quality sports shoes. A bit of research led to the idea of refurbishing them into trendy slippers.

With further research, it was found that worldwide every year more than 35,00,00,000 pairs of shoes are discarded, while as per the recent report by WHO, 1.5 billion people are infected by diseases that could be prevented by wearing proper footwear. While manufacturing a pair of shoes involves a total of assembling up to 65 discrete parts in 360 steps, which generates 30 lbs of emissions; equivalent to leaving a 100-watt bulb burning for a week.

Written and contributed by Technology for Wildlife Written and contributed by Technology for Wildlife, a conservation enterprise with expertise in geospatial data analysis and robot operations. They amplify conservation impact by helping clients & partners understand, access and deploy modern technology appropriately.

Through this project, they were able to collect media and data which can be used to enhance research for Olive Ridley conservation in Goa. The successfully conducted test transects are a starting point for future population surveys using UAVs. These results, along with the media and data collected, can also be used for policy, advocacy, conservation planning and community engagement. Finally, as a successful conservation collaboration between three organisations from the government, non-profit and private enterprise sectors in India, using cutting-edge technology, will only serve to inform and benefit future such initiatives.

Conceived as a solution to address the pain points of street vendors, the Tigoona is positioned as a wonder on wheels.

Abhijit Bansod, Founder, Studio ABD, says “The paradox of life is when I step out of home, I see a completely different India. On one hand, there is the tech-savvy India, and on the other is an India that’s still struggling with ‘jugaads’. In our booming retail story, the hawkers or the mobile vendors of India have been awaiting their turn to earn attention and positive transformation.”

The studio is working with government bodies like the BBMP, NGOs and organizations like the Rotary Club, SEWA & Access Dev and getting support from crowdsourcing to get onboard more vendors and take the concept to more potential beneficiaries. The studio is seeking institutional partners to take this forward.

Over 500 community members between the ages of 5-80 years participated in this project and shared thoughts and visual memories around the river. The process allowed for adaptations based on individual community needs. One of the major material outcomes of the project included thirteen six-metre-long visuals panels. Big Reveal brought together many of the participating communities to jointly view all their drawings and share their ongoing journey with the river. Community-driven songs, politically charged street plays and reproduced folk songs based on the river were presented, demonstrating engagement with the river theme triggered by Nhoi.

Shrujan’s initiative to set up this project reiterates its institutional presence in Bhujodi Kutch. It has since become the main geographical placemark for 2500 + artisans that it involves in its fold. It also spurred the making of other artisan centers around the Bhujodi area by locals and several other NGO’s. The flagship store at Shrujan, generates sales revenues for crafts that support several artisan groups. While its architectural presence cannot be underplayed, several students of crafts and architecture visit Bhujodi annually. The Design Museum Dharavi has been created as an experimental project to explore the impact that design may have on the perception and future development of areas such as Dharavi. We are excited to see how institutes, museums and similar cultural institutes will adopt a more socially relevant role in the future, where design methodologies are being applied in unforeseen scenarios. On a meta-level, our idea is to create a model that in the future can be implemented in other similar settlements around the world. To start this discussion, a conference was held in summer 2016 in Amsterdam, where the results so far of the Design Museum Dharavi were exhibited, and experts from different disciplines gave their own view on this matter.

It is only this intervention which prevented villagers from migrating to areas near the city. They were troubled by successive droughts and their only dwelling was devastated by the earthquake. It has, due to the retention of their unique habitat, resulted in its becoming a tourist destination. It has again rekindled hope in them regarding the area and the potential it has for them. It is now an oasis in the desert.

On the other side of the intersection from the Wall House is a ‘Thakur Dalan’, a permanently covered podium reserved for frequent rituals of various deities and a focal venue of religious festivals. During the construction of the residence, the patrons of the trust that maintains this pavilion approached Abin Design Studio for effective intervention. For the conception of Narayantala Thakurdalan, the relationship of the people with the place was observed over a span of several weeks – how some people would offer their prayers twice a day while many visited only occasionally, how a few devotees spent considerable amounts of time offering obeisance while others simply bowed their heads from their cycles as they rode past. This place of worship played a different role in each person’s daily life and this provided cues for the design of the space.
