Working closely with Hunnarshala, an institution looking to revive and resuscitate local building traditions. Our approach to the Jetavan project looks to extend the idea of the regional paradigm whilst separating it from the pervasive ‘image’ of what defines the local. The construction process also sets out an approach that looks to further construction techniques based on local materiality not necessarily used natively but appropriates for its context.

The stone dust, a waste from a nearby quarry is mixed with waste fly ash for walls. Repurposed wood from old shipping vessels acts as roof structure, with the understructure made of mud rolls, which are also great insulation. The roof itself is finished with clay roof tiles, remnants from older demolished buildings.

With the mandate of not harming a single tree on site, the sizable program was split up into 6 buildings each situated in gaps between the heavy planting. Through the design process, two courtyards emerged as links suturing these buildings into a common identity.

Aanandshala program and built interventions are implemented in over 300 primary and upper primary government schools in villages across India. It started in the year 2001-02, with schools in the tribal belt of Gujarat bordering Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The program had to adapt to various pedagogical systems, cultural and social context with technological challenges. With concerns to decrease the dropout rates, improve quality of education in the government primary schools and to imbibe the value of education, Aanandshala took various forms.

The project started with the aim to build an amphitheatre for the children. The rigorous study of the place, not limited to its architecture, helped to expand the project. The process delved into the history, social, and cultural aspects of the place. Speculative drawings helped to understand the evolution of urban form and its terrain. Public gathering spaces of different scales were developed around the theatre. These spaces are used as leisure spaces by the people of the ashram. It is quiet and submerged in nature. When there are no performances, the theatre transforms into a lively playground for children, a private study space, or a peaceful meeting space for grandmothers of the ashram.

https://socialdesignlibrary.in/waste-wagon-upcycled-bus-for-waste-collection/

The project capitalises on the appeal for recycling/upcycling waste creating a familiar icon to manage waste. By providing second life to a retired vehicle, the design not only presents a sustainable alternative but also challenges the conventions of a single-use, single-life production idea.

By utilising simple details and a design-prototype-scale-deploy approach, the project ensures that any fabrication workshop can undertake the assignment of re-modelling the Waste-Wagon in less than 10% of the cost of a new vehicle! The design approach has the potential to be a model for cities to re-assign ageing vehicles in service of waste-management.

In the past decade, the world has witnessed the dark consequences of our wasteful and indulgent contemporary lives. In a developing nation like India, waste is an omnipresent by-product of progress. However, people of all ages and economic backgrounds are becoming increasingly aware of the value in ideas of using less and re-use.

https://socialdesignlibrary.in/designing-water-systems-for-ranchi/

Mahila Housing Sewa Trust works with 55 informal settlements in Ranchi, and water insecurity is reported in each of these settlements. Informal settlements in Ranchi were traditionally reliant on community-managed resources such as open dug wells, tanks and ponds, which are closely linked to surface water sources and rivers. However, due to urban growth, inadequate treatment and discharge of wastewater into the rivers of the city, the surface and sub-surface water systems have become polluted. This, in turn, has contaminated water in wells, tanks and ponds along the floodplains of the rivers – sources upon which informal settlements were formerly dependent.
Integrated design studied to understand existing water stresses in the informal settlements of Ranchi by identifying common practices and specific challenges. Basis of this analysis, the study recommends general measures that will aim to enhance access to water by improving both the quantity and quality of water available. The outcome is meant to both decrease the dependence of settlements on piped water supply systems and groundwater, and to revive or strengthen their links to local water resources.
Since Mahila Housing Sewa Trust has a close working relationship with the informal settlements of Ranchi, it is anticipated that study will form the basis for further advocacy on water issues at the settlement and city level to be taken up by the Mahila Housing Sewa Trust with the Government of Jharkhand.

The idea of this programme was born from a simple question – What are India’s design stories? While the question may be simple, the answer requires a deep dive into the heart of India-her villages. The present system of design/architectural education places emphasis on historic and contemporary design movements across the West, with comparatively less learning focus on the Indian idea of design. Once they complete their education, designers fail to understand the critical role they play as context-sensitive creators. For those who do identify this, there is no well-defined path to engage at the ground level. The entry into this sector is unclear, dissuading many from foraying closer to it.

Around the world, the pandemic has magnified the importance of public spaces and the way cities are built to facilitate healthy and happy living. Children and youth of today will be engineers, architects, planners and politicians of tomorrow and our experiences through ‘Observe’ has further cemented our belief in effectively informing this impressionable segment of our community. Through the course of Observe, listening to over 150 younglings across all editions wanting to transform our cities and helping them with avenues to do so gives us a renewed sense of hope that our cities and country will be in good hands.

https://socialdesignlibrary.in/krushi-bhawan/

One-fifth of the floor space at Krushi Bhawan is dedicated to crop and fishery samples—housed on the terrace level. These urban farming samples serve to train the state’s farmers in the latest agricultural techniques as well as educate the local population about the ecological diversity of the region.

Krushi Bhawan transcends the typical closed office campus morphology by integrating governmental functions with direct community engagement and education. Through the meticulously developed spatial programme, the complex brings the Odia farmers and the citizens of Bhubaneswar into the fold and facilitates their interaction and collaboration. It thus seeks to present with its design and building process a model of frugal innovation that celebrates culture, seeks to include the neighbourhood and is highly sustainable and relevant to what countries such as India need. It also serves as an example of how the government can become a key patron of regional crafts, and sustain the communities and economies built around them.

https://socialdesignlibrary.in/reframe-funding-mental-health/

The content is built in a way that is engaging and accessible to a wider audience, demystifying mental health and questioning existing norms. The approach to design and language deliberately appeals to a global audience, but from a uniquely South Asian perspective. This positions MHI as a global leader in mental health practices, a departure from the standard: the eurocentric perception of South Asian experiences.
